Voice of Conflict & Peace: A Tribute on A Shanti Jayanti

As the dappled morning sun of October 2nd dances on the earth, it illuminates the legacy of a man whose whispered words moved mountains and unsettled empires: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In the bustling lanes of London, a young Gandhi sought to articulate the voice of law. But destiny's capricious hand cast him amidst the arid landscapes of South Africa. Here, amidst racial divides and oppressive regimes, he emerged not just as a barrister, but as the voice for the silent, the oppressed.

His return to India transformed this voice into a clarion call of freedom, championing a movement of resilience and resistance. His profound conviction in non-violence taught us that revolutions could be both silent and sonorous, challenging oppressive forces with truth and tenacity.

Within this grand narrative, there emerges a personal tale that I cherish. In 1945, Odakkal Master, my father and a member of the Royal Indian Navy, encountered Gandhiji in the serene environs of Mumbai's Juhu. This fleeting moment, an intimate intersection of the ordinary with the extraordinary, speaks to the Mahatma's accessibility and his penchant for personal connection.

The narrative gains further resonance when considering that the Royal Indian Navy was christened on this very date in 1934. This alignment of stars — where an institution pledged to safeguard India's maritime boundaries shares its inception day with the birth of a man dedicated to guarding India's ethos — is indeed poetic.

Today, as the world navigates uncharted waters, Gandhi's principles of non-violence and truth offer a rudder. His ethos, undimmed by time, lights our path in addressing the contemporary cacophony of prejudices and discords.

Today, as the world navigates uncharted waters, Gandhiji's principles of non-violence and truth offer a rudder. His ethos, undimmed by time, lights our path in addressing the contemporary cacophony of prejudices and discords. The imperative to Venture Within and embrace our individual truth, to Overcome Obstacles that stifle genuine dialogue, to Ignite Relationships fostering mutual respect, to continuously Cultivate Learning from past and present, and to Empower for Transformation — all of these principles encapsulate the essence of Gandhian philosophy.

In our age of digitization, suppressed voices find sanctuaries to resonate. Platforms once unimaginable now amplify tales of resilience and hope. At Johnson Odakkal Initiatives, our mission transcends mere articulation; it emphasises the magnification of the collective conscience, firmly rooted in the tenets of the V.O.I.C.E. framework.

On this Gandhi Jayanti, let us reaffirm our pledge to channel our voices, not for merely drowning out others, but for harmony, unity, and peace. In honouring Mahatma Gandhi's legacy, let us echo his profound wisdom, crafting a future imbued with compassion, understanding, and shared purpose.
