V.O.I.C.E. Of Naval Power Across the Ocean

On Indian Navy Day, we celebrate the strategic might and the historic feats of naval prowess that have defined our maritime heritage. This day, commemorating the audacious naval actions in the 1971 War, also beckons us to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of our naval history and its contemporary significance.

The ancient tale of Samudra Manthan (समुद्र मंथन), vividly captured in Sanjeev Sanyal's work, “Ocean of Churn,” and symbolised interestingly not in India (ie भारत) at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, is not just a mythological narrative but a metaphor for the pursuit of knowledge as power. This churn of the ocean, in its essence, represents the relentless quest for wisdom, a principle that has guided civilizations across ages.

Maritime history witnesses the visionary coastal strategies of Shivaji Maharaj, often misconstrued as the first ever visionary of indigenous naval power in India. It is a strategic short-selling of his brilliance as a multi-terrain perspective strategist. His foresight in conceptualising significant Brown Water excellence was the foundation that would finally flourish under Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, who truly demonstrated the might of naval power. The English called the Sarkhel an “Angria Pirate!”

The current over-sell of Maratha Armaar as the sole forebearers of Indian Naval brilliance through time questions the indomitable saga of the Malabar Naval resistance. The four Kunjali Marakkars displayed the vision and mettle to build a navy from scratch. Their sustained valour over the ocean scape for over a century ensured that the Portuguese were kept at bay from the Malabar Coast barring Goa. These stories of resistance and tactical genius are pivotal chapters in our maritime legacy.

Taking this reverse spiral of Indian naval history to the 11th century brings the true “Father” of the Indian Navy - Rajendra Chola. He launched the transoceanic expedition that epitomises the essence of naval strength and the zeal to preserve freedom beyond territorial waters. This historical journey underscores India's long standing connection and command over the oceans.

Today, the Indian Navy stands as a formidable force, an embodiment of nautical power extending its influence across the oceans. As free citizens of maritime India, may we celebrate this power. Let's embrace the values imbibed by the acronym OCEAN, reflecting the spirit of the Indian Navy:

Optimism. Facing challenges with a positive outlook, believing in the potential of concerted efforts.

Courage. Displaying bravery in the face of adversity, upholding the ethos of fearlessness.

Excellence. Striving for unparalleled standards in every endeavor, setting benchmarks of performance.

Adaptability. Embracing change and being flexible to navigate through uncharted waters.

Nationhood. Upholding the values of pride and dedication to the nation, reflecting a deep commitment to the progress and significance of our country.

As we commemorate Indian Navy Day, let every Indian find their V.O.I.C.E. through these values, drawing inspiration from our naval heritage to steer our personal and collective journeys towards success and fulfilment.
